Despite charging ｣250 a set, the demand has been so great that the Stationery Office recently ran out of the new "Woolf" Civil Procedures Rules. And, while they can be downloaded free of charge from the Lord Chancellor's Department web site, there have been complaints that far from being easy-to-use, the site verges on being user-hostile. Litigation support specialist Bowhawk Consulting (01252 716694) believes it has a compromise solution and is now making copies of the rules and practice directions available on CD-Rom for ｣49.95 (+ VAT and p&p). The project has been approved by the LCD and the rules are published in a PDF portable document file format that can be viewed using Bowhawk's own Discovery Express litigation support software or Adobe Acrobat Reader.
外国為替の取引では、必然的に「自国通貨と外国通貨とを交換する」こととなり、その交換比率、すなわち外国為替相場が成立することになる。狭い意味では、外国為替の手段である具体的な外国為替手形や送金小切手のことを指したり、外国為替相場のことを指すこともある。
また、（やや本来の用法を逸脱するが、）銀行の外国為替業務と言った場合、外国為替相場が関わる外貨現金との両替業務（外貨現金の直接輸送があることが前提）や、外貨預金に関わる業務（国際間の貸借関係を必ずしも前提としない）を含めることが多い。「外為（がいため）」と略称で呼ばれることも多い。
外国為替資金特別会計法第1条により、政府の行う外国為替等（外国為替及び外国貿易法（昭和24年法律第228号）第６条第１項に規定する対外支払手段及び外貨証券並びに外貨債権（外国において又は外貨をもつて支払を受けることができる債権をいう。）並びに特別引出権（国際通貨基金協定第15条に規定する特別引出権をいう。）並びに対外支払の決済上必要な金銀地金をいう。）の売買（国際通貨基金及び国際復興開発銀行への加盟に伴う措置に関する法律（昭和27年法律第191号）第17条の規定による取引を含む。）及びこれに伴う取引（国際通貨基金とのその他の取引を含む。）を円滑にするために外国為替資金を置き、その運営に関する経理を一般会計と区分して特別に行うため、特別会計が設置されている。
